President Bush is scheduled to make his annual address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, September 25, 2007. Even without a complete policy overhaul, the president can improve America’s damaged image around the world by emphasizing renewed U.S. cooperation and commitment on issues of international peace and security that are sure to impact U.S. national interests over the coming years. Here are a few of the things we think the president could touch on:

  • President Bush should make clear that we are eager to work together toward common goals and ready to support and work through international institutions, in particular the United Nations.
  • The theme of this year’s General Assembly is climate change. President Bush must affirm that the U.S. will do its share to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • If we want others support to our security priorities – combating global terrorism and nuclear proliferation; we must be willing to aggressively tackle the issues that matter most to others: poverty, disease, and nuclear weapons disarmament.
  • President Bush should call on all leaders to recommit to our shared Responsibility to Protect civilians in Sudan, Chad, Uganda, the Congo, and elsewhere from grave abuses of human rights.
