When it comes to the Armenian Genocide Resolution passed this week by the U.S. House of Respresentatives, the always-funny Jon Stewart got it wrong, and Steve Clemons and the Bush Adminstration got it right.
For anyone interested in preventing war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, I would strongly suggest that you expend your energy helping to address the ongoing struggles for justice in places like Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, Cambodia and Burma, rather than working to pass strategically-questionable (to say the very least), ill-timed, largely toothless resolutions that do not save lives. Heck, if you stop genocide and save lives now, you won’t have to debate the pros and cons of symbolic resolutions later…long after all the mass graves have been filled with the bodies of innocents.
