At CGS we have consistently pushed for the U.S. to close the detention facilities at Gitmo. We have noted that there are real costs associated with this flawed policy. Here at the ABA meeting in San Francisco the question of what to do about Guantanamo is a big issue. It is being looked at in a number of different ways and I noted with interest that the Section on Litigation was devoting a key program slot to an analysis of Guantanamo and the Rule of Law in a Time of War. I hope that the efforts of CGS, the ABA and hundreds/thousands of concerned individuals across the country can push our elected officials to seriously address this issue. We need to close Gitmo from a human rights, national security and foreign policy perspective.
Unfortunately, as some senior lawyers fear, President Bush seems likely to simply leave the issue for his successor….and if it is Mitt “double the size of Gitmo” Romney, we are all in trouble.
