Today’s Washington Post features an interesting opinion piece defending embattled World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz. The author of the “defense” is Andrew Young, the civil rights leader and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Young pleads with “the Europeans” to join him in forgiving Wolfowitz for leading “us” to war in Iraq and to instead allow Wolfowitz to continue to show “an aggressive impatience with the evils of disease and poverty” as World Bank President. Mr. Young makes a powerful case but unfortunately for Mr. Wolfowitz it is not necessarily a relevant one. For is seems that his tenure is at risk because precisely because of his behavior as World Bank President and a fear that he is harming this vitally important International Financial Institution. We will hear a lot more about this issue over the course of the day….stay tuned.
