The United Nations Committee Against Torture has urged the Polish government to share the findings of a report into its alleged collusion in the CIA extraordinary rendition program. The request by the UN panel signals serious concern over the country’s participation in renditions and the transfer of detainees. Poland denies any involvement in the program but the report by the Polish parliament is confidential and all information remains undisclosed, thus failing to bring closure to the allegations. Human Rights Watch previously identified Poland as a possible European location for secret prisons.
If Poland has indeed not partaken in any clandestine activity relating to extraordinary rendition – which breaches international human rights standards – surely bringing the findings of the inquiry to light would be key considering the public opposition across the European Union to the war on terror – and the implication of some heavyweight countries such as Britain and Germany.
