Larry Cox, the executive director of Amnesty International USA, is truly one of the best human rights activists around. He just gave a fantastic speech on the so call “Global War on Terror” and connected with an energetic crowd comprised of young students from every corner of the globe and AI’s New Mexico based members.
Larry focused on the human cost of the response to the 9/11 attacks and the fact that a few years ago it would have been impossible to believe that the Bush Administration could get away with actions such as torture, use of rendition etc.
The question and answer session was no less lively and reassured me that there are many bright and
progressive minds, young and old, who have a keen sense of the substantive building blocks for a post Bush U.S. foreign policy.
The cadre of Presidential candidates aspiring for votes from this philosophical demographic should be on notice that they are a long way from convincing “their base” that they have the wherewithal to correct U.S. foreign policy and our reputation around the globe.
