Darfur advocates in Indiana are celebrating today after a long battle to see Indiana divest its state pension money from companies doing business in Sudan. After the original bill (HB 1484) failed to make it to the Indiana Senate floor at the last minute, Darfur advocates rallied to include divestment language into a compromise bill before the Indiana General Assembly adjourned. Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels signed HB1067 into law yesterday, including the divestment language from the original bill. Indiana is the 10th state in the United States to divest from Sudan.

Indiana is home to one of the largest populations of Darfurians in the United States. Fort Wayne, Indiana is home to roughly 300 Darfurians alone. I’ve been inspired by the local efforts of a coalition of volunteers in Indiana dedicated to the Darfur issue, and am certain we will see more great efforts from them in the future.
