2010 CGS Annual Meeting: Edward Rawson Global Citizen Award

May 21, 2010 @ 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT

Event Description

Pandemic disease, terrorism, nuclear proliferation, pollution and economic collapse now arrive faster than the institutions built to handle them. At its annual meeting on 21 May 2010, Citizens for Global Solutions honored long-time member Edward Rawson as the first recipient of the award that bears his name. The Edward Rawson Global Citizen Award recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding lifetime contribution to education and advocacy for global solutions.

The recording above is his acceptance speech. Rawson accepted the award on behalf of the thousands who had worked for a peaceful and just world governed by law, and looked back on how communication and travel had changed in his lifetime. He said the movement’s core beliefs were now accepted by mainstream voices, citing the First Lady’s remarks to graduates the week before, and called for impartial international courts for disputes such as cross-border child custody and bankruptcy, a trusteeship for failing states, and an end to the paralysis the Security Council veto can cause. He thought a Charter change unlikely for 25 years, and closed by telling future recipients to “dream big and carry on”.
