GlobalSolutions.org Internships
We are seeking full-time interns for a substantive and challenging experience at our Washington, D.C. headquarters. The application period is now open for our Summer 2013 Internship Program.
GlobalSolutions.org is a groundbreaking national membership movement for Americans who want the United States to take a responsible and cooperative role in the world. Our policy areas include: human rights, climate change, international peacekeeping, nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament, international institutions and United Nations reform.
Internships are integral to the work we do. This is a unique opportunity to help build our national movement that promotes a responsible and cooperative role for the U.S. in the world, while learning first-hand about non-profit management and online advocacy.
Our interns work with all teams. While interns are allowed to state a preference for a specific team, placement in that position is not guaranteed. Placement will depend primarily on matching an applicant's experience with the needs of various teams. While all interns should expect to provide administrative support and help maintain the GlobalSolutions.org blog, specific departmental duties include:
- Online Fundraising - Researching individuals and foundations that are potential GlobalSolutions.org supporters; scheduling meetings and making introductory phone calls to potential and existing supporters; working to increase our membership base; writing grant inquiries and proposals; and generally supporting the efforts of the Development team.
- Communications and Social Media - Researching and writing communication materials for GlobalSolutions.org, including blogs, fact sheets, advocacy emails, press releases, etc. This intern also supports to our social media efforts, and thus this position requires significant familiarity with Facebook and Twitter (comfort with other platforms desired but not required). This position also supports all other efforts of the Marketing and Communications team.
- Campaigns - Creating, writing and backstopping electronic advocacy initiatives (online petitions, action alerts, etc.); exploring growth opportunities in our membership base; helping to coordinate outreach efforts, including the University Chapter Programs; and supporting the efforts of the Campaigns team.
- Executive - Assisting the senior management team with all tasks, including planning, policy, government relations and development. Senior management's areas of engagement include administrative assistance, strategic planning, NGO relations, government relations, writing blog posts and letters to the editor, communications with donors and foundations, and attending speeches and receptions.
- Government Relations - Representing GlobalSolutions.org in working group meetings, attending meetings with Congressional staffers on Capitol Hill; analyzing the voting patterns of Congress in regards to select international related votes; follow election campaigns and communicate with candidate election committees; supporting the Government Relations team.
- Graphic Design - Creating and designing memes and other social media content. Seeking someone with a great sense of humor, a love of international issues, and an eye for designing social media content.
Qualifications:
- College or Graduate Student.
- Passion for learning and an interest in international issues
- Knowledge of U.S. politics and/or international affairs OR interest/training in electronic advocacy
- Excellent writing and oral communication skills
- General computer skills. Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, especially Word and Excel (knowledge of Outlook, PowerPoint, and Access also desirable, but not required).
Length and Compensation:
Our internship program generally runs in three cycles:
- Fall - early September to mid-December
- Spring - early January to mid-May
- Summer - mid-May to mid-August
- Interns must be available to work at least 20 hours per week but preference will be given to those available to work full time, which is Monday through Friday from 9:30 am till 5:30 pm.
- Interns are provided with a travel stipend of $10 each day, paid bi-weekly.

Please submit a brief, 1-2 page writing sample. Your writing sample should be analytical in nature, meaning that it provides critical analysis or supports an argument rather than merely providing background information on an issue. We suggest you write a sample Blog Post, as our interns are expected to write several per week.

GLOBAL CITIZEN BLOGGER
Global Solutions.org is a groundbreaking national online movement for Americans who want the United States to take a responsible and cooperative role in the world. We envision a future in which nations work together to abolish war, protect our rights and freedoms, and solve problems facing humanity that no nation can solve alone. GlobalSolutions.org role is to empower members to articulate and act on this vision. Our goal is to build by the end of this decade a member base of millions of Americans who will speak with one voice on issues that they have determined to be of vital importance.
We are seeking Bloggers to contribute timely analysis to our popular blog, The Global Citizen. Bloggers will write a minimum of two posts / month, with the support of the Globalsolutions.org staff. Ultimately, Bloggers will help us drive forward the conversation around the US' role in building a more responsible and cooperative world.
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Writing at least two blog posts / month, and loading them on the GlobalSolutions.org website.
- Working with GlobalSolutions.org staff and volunteers to identify timely and interesting blog content.
- Drafting Facebook and Twitter content drawing off of your blog posts, to share through the GlobalSolutions.org social media platforms.
The Details:
This is a virtual, volunteer position. Bloggers will contribute approximately 5 hours/month for 6 months. In exchange, they will get training and support from the Globalsolutions.org staff, and the chance to share their views with an active online community of concerned global citizens.
Skills and Qualifications Needed:
This is an exciting position for a confident writer who wants to lead conversations around the US role in the world. Bloggers don't need to be experts on these issues; rather they should represent the voice of concerned, engaged Americans who follow the news and care about global cooperation. The biggest thing we're looking for are people who are excited, want to learn, believe in our mission, and can make this commitment.

SOCIAL MEDIA TEAM MEMBER

We are seeking Social Media Team Members to help drive our presence on Facebook and Twitter. Team Members will identify storylines, develop posts and cultivate conversations. Ultimately, the Social Media Team will help us drive forward the conversation around the US' role in building a more responsible and cooperative world.
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Working with Globalsolutions.org staff to identify timely, interesting story lines.
- Finding interesting content on the internet for GlobalSolutions.org to repost or turn into original content
- Developing content, ranging from tweets to Facebook memes, in collaboration with Globalsolutions.org staff.
- Monitoring and cultivating our Facebook and Twitter pages; reaching out to new audiences, encouraging conversation, responding to traffic, etc.
The Details:
This is a virtual, volunteer position. Social Media Team Members will contribute approximately 2 hours/week for 6 months. In exchange, they will get training and support from the Globalsolutions.org staff, and the chance to help build an active online community of global citizens.
Skills and Qualifications Needed:
This is an exciting position for an individual who is comfortable using Facebook and Twitter, and/or eager to learn. Team members don't need to be experts on these issues; rather they should represent the voice of concerned, engaged Americans who follow the news and care about global cooperation. The biggest thing we're looking for are people who are excited, want to learn, believe in our mission, and can make this commitment.

CAMPUS REPRESENTATIVES

We are seeking Campus Representatives to represent our community at the local level. Campus Reps will build relationships, share our work, and represent our national campaigns in their community. Ultimately, Campus Reps will help us drive forward the conversation around the US' role in building a more responsible and cooperative world.
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Working with Globalsolutions.org staff to identify relevant events and actions for your campus.
- Leading campus campaigns and activities. This might include bringing one of our popular national campaigns to your campus, getting signatures for our petitions, signing people up for the GlobalSolutions.org listserv, fundraising, liaising with other groups to organize events, and recruiting supporters to help get the word out.
- Building and maintaining relationships with like-minded groups and individuals, with the broader objective of building our network.
The Details:
This is a virtual, volunteer position. Campus Reps will contribute approximately 10 hours/month for 6 months, and in return will gain valuable leadership, organizing and campaign skills. This is an exciting opportunity to get concrete, valuable experience working on global issues.
Skills and Qualifications Needed:
This is an exciting position for an individual who is comfortable leading groups, implementing campaigns and building relationships. Campus Reps don't need experience doing any of the above; rather the biggest thing we're looking for are people who are excited, want to learn, believe in our mission, and can make this commitment.
