Citizens for Global Solutions congratulates Chris Coons (D) on his victory in the Delaware Senate race and welcomes him as a new member of the U.S. Senate! In one of the most publicized races of the mid-term election, Coons won the Delaware Senate seat by 18%, defeating tea party candidate and anti-internationalist Christine O’Donnell. Coons received support from moderates and both President Obama and Vice-President Biden who spoke of Coons as “a man of incredible integrity.”

Coon’s moderate stance on issues such as foreign policy attracted voters in Delaware who were concerned with Christine O’Donnell’s lack of experience and extreme viewpoints. In interviews O’Donnell had expressed her concerns with the New Start Treaty and on her campaign website she stated she did not want to “outsource our foreign policy to the U.N.”

In contrast, Coons expressed his desire for a pragmatic U.S. foreign policy based on cooperation with various international organizations. In his Citizens for Global Solutions Candidate Questionnaire Coons stated, “I believe that our nation is best served by a robust, engaged foreign policy, based in diplomacy and strategic partnerships with other nations.” Read Coon’s CQ!.

We are glad that the citizens of Delaware voted for a candidate that will move the U.S. towards a position of global engagement and we look forward to working with him on important international issues that affect all Americans!
