The Global Citizen: US Engagement
On Wednesday, May 6, the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations held a hearing with Senator John Kerry presiding. The hearing addressed prevention of nuclear proliferation in Iran and challenges it posed to the global community. Witnesses included District Attorney and Assistant District Attorney for New York County, Robert Morgenthau and Adam Kaufmann, as well as Former Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns.
The United States Mission to the United Nations released its Progress Report last week, giving a positive outlook on future US-UN relations and US engagement on international issues. The biggest thing to take from the Progress Report is that the current administration has acknowledged that and promoted the idea that international engagement is required to meet modern threats.
We were thrilled to hear that this April the Obama Administration will be sending a delegation to represent the United States at a preparatory meeting for the United Nations Durban Review Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. The Durban II Conference will review the commitments established by each country in the original U.N. World Conference Against Racism held in Durban, in 2001. In 2001, the United States led a walkout of the Durban Conference because of the anti-Jewish and anti-Israel message that dominated the conference.
We're excited by the speech that Vice-President Joe Biden gave at last week at the 45th Munich security conference . He made it clear that the U.S.
What a wonderful turnout we had for last Saturday's Responsible US Global Engagement call! 184 chapter leaders and activists of CGS and our co-sponsoring organizations took time out on a Saturday to phone in and hear about our priorities for the beginning of the Obama administration, as well as those of some other organizations that are working on the same issues. Most importantly, we went over some specific ways CGS members in every state can help achieve these foreign policy goals.
I'm always excited about our bi-monthly Partners for Global Change calls, but I'm especially excited about the one coming up this Saturday. First of all, it comes during the opening week of the 111th Congress, one where we have more supporters for our positions of increased cooperative global engagement than ever. But I'm even more excited about the fact that members of many other organizations will be joining us for a special "Responsible US Global Engagement" conference call.
Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. Barack Obama was criticized by the McCain campaign for not having visited the Middle East, which they believed displayed a lack of foreign policy intelligence and experience. So, Obama and his campaign scheduled meetings in Jordan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel and Kuwait to show that he is directly informed and has had personal contact with American troops.
The U.S. Mission to the United Nations is hosting a briefing on the 2008 presidential elections later this week. The three speakers are Former Rep. David Bonior from the Edwards campaign, Former Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey from the Romney campaign, and Frank Luntz.
This week, I attended two fascinating briefings on how the American public is thinking about the world. The first was a press conference to unveil research sponsored by the UN Foundation and the second was a small working group organized by the Stanley Foundation.
The relationship between the United States and the U.N. has often been compared to a marriage. This October will be their 63rd anniversary. Like most marriages there are moments when life is wonderful, and moments when it is not. As in any relationship, we need to find common ground and rules we can all live by. We need to sit around the table and iron out the family's problems.
