The Global Citizen: South Africa
Last week in Cape Town, South Africa thousands of children took to the streets to protest for better schools. After apartheid ended in South Africa, leaders have tried to create a better education system for the children of the country. Unfortunately, they have not taken the most effective measures. The current protest movement takes precedence from a 1976 uprising against apartheid. One of the leaders of the current movement, led by an organization called Equal Education, is Zackie Achmat- one of South Africa's main advocates for AIDS treatment.
A South African Foreign Ministry Official recently confirmed that Sudanese President Omer Al-Bashir will be arrested if he sets foot on South African soil. This would be done in compliance with South Africa's obligations to the International Criminal Court, which has issued an arrest warrant for Bashir for seven counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed in Darfur. Under the Court's Statute, member states are obliged to arrest individuals on their soil who have had an arrest warrant issued for them by the Court.
Much has been made in the past week of the ongoing talks in South Africa by delegates of Zimbabwe's feuding parties, Zanu-PF and MDC, to negotiate an end to the country's current political crisis. Talks are coming on the heels of what has been a turbulent three months following the controversial March 29th general elections.
