The Global Citizen: John Bolton
While Frank Gaffney wrote his first column without any reference to the Law of the Sea in nearly half a year, he probably helped pen the lead editorial on the page opposite his column in the Washington Times.
I have no interest in paying $27 for John Bolton's Surrender is Not an Option, even if he were willing to sign it from me. But I have been enjoying recent reviews of the book.
The Washington Note's Sameer Lalwani argues/affirms/reaffirms/repeats that John Bolton is, in fact, not a petty neoconservative, but rather a pugnacious nationalist . Okay. Maybe he's right (unlikely)...maybe he's wrong (likely). But I'm a simple midwesterner, so I don't care if you call it a pretty pig or a sexy swine, it's all bacon and pork chops to me. Very simply, Bolton's bad news if you want a U.S. foreign policy that is principled, morally sound and reflects an enlightened national self-interest.
File Rosa Brooks' recent LA Times op-ed, "This just in: "diplomacy works," under "Diplomacy" and "Satire".
Money "Quote":
It turns out that John Bolton's recent lobbying against the Law of the Sea represents a major flip-flop.
I've known about this exchange for quite a while, but it doesn't commit Bolton to personal support of the treaty:
U.N. basher John Bolton has supposedly been talking to the very conserative Senate Republican Steering Group, a shadowy entity that does not appear in the congressional directory and is headed by Senator Jim DeMint. Bolton was there to hammer on the Law of the Sea convention, which is slowly working its way towards ratification.
"We're talking about a clear message to Iran -- Israel has the right to self-defense --and that includes offensive operations against WMD facilities that pose a threat to Israel. The United States would justify such attacks." -- John Bolton
I guess it's not at all surprising that Bolton doesn't agree with this statement from retired Gen. John Abizaid: "I believe that we have the power to deter Iran, should it become nuclear."
In delivering the Heritage Foundation's Margaret Thatcher Freedom Lecture, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and current American Enterprise Institute Senior Fellow John R. Bolton sought to answer the question: Does the United Nations advance the cause of freedom?
