The Global Citizen: Don Kraus
Last week I spoke to members of the United Nations Association (UNA-USA) who were preparing to lobby their members of Congress. I was asked to give a 30,000 foot overview of the political climate on the Hill regarding the UN, an update on the U.S. role at the Human Rights Council and the status of ratification of the Law of the Sea convention, CEDAW and the Rights of the Child treaty. Take a look at the presentation and let me know if you have any questions.
(February 24, 2010) This morning Stephen Rapp, Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues, spoke to the Washington Working Group on the International Criminal Court. Rapp addressed the current status of the U.S. relationship with the International Criminal Court and his experiences at the Assembly of States Parties meeting in November of 2009. Over twenty-five NGOs attended representing a cross-section and important representation of the NGO ICC-support community in Washington DC.
Last night I had the pleasure of participation in a presentation at the Council on Foreign Relations given by Luis Moreno-Ocampo, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. As conveyors' of the Washington Working Group on the ICC we had helped him set up a few meetings on the Hill. Our Program Coordinator, Abby Long helped out tremendously in this effort.
My friend Mark Goldberg at the UN Dispatch wrote an excellent piece on Ocampo's key points.
I want to emphasize two points that Mark mentioned and one that he didn't:
First, the true relevance of the Court is its global impact. Ocampo said that:
About 30 international students from North Carolina State University hustled themselves out of bed on a Saturday morning to talk about what it means to be a Global Citizen. CEO Don Kraus met with the students at the CGS office in Washington, D.C., where he emphasized the need to be engaged with the rest of the world by learning, lobbying and traveling.
He demonstrated those points by showing the group the winning videos and animations from our 2008 Multimedia contest.

You've heard it before, but there's no harm in hearing it once more - this is an historic election, and the perfect opportunity to make your vote count. With just a few days to go before the elections, there's a lot of information out there for you to sieve through on how these candidates will vote and act once elected.
My colleagues Scott Paul and Don Kraus have presented an array of recent posts on The Law of the Sea Treaty.
In Sunday's Kansas City Star, one of middle America's great newspapers, it editorializes on the need for the Senate to ratify LOS and cites Citizens for Global Solutions as its source:
Former Governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney is among the top tier of candidates for the GOP presidential nomination. As one of the leading contenders, he has often been assailed by his rivals for flip-flopping, waffling or just flat out changing his views on an array of issues in order to endear himself to the base of his party.
Yesterday, one of my colleagues - Don Kraus - had a personal experience with the Romney campaign. An experience that feeds directly into the frame that Romney, and his campaign, is an evolutionary thinker when it comes to policy stances.
Noted peace historian, Lawrence S. Wittner's thought provoking essay on how the peace movement can be more effective has spawned 11 responses, my own included.
Wittner calls for the movement to come together around a central organization. I believe this will be too limiting in scope, capacity, and entrepreneurial effectiveness. Today, an effective movement must organize around a more networked approach.
