Strengthening the United Nations
We urge for a more transparent and democratic UN through comprehensive reforms to strengthen its governance, enhance transparency, and improve accountability.
Our founding members played an integral role in the establishing the United Nations “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war,” “promote fundamental human rights,” “establish conditions under which justice … can be maintained,” and further “social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom.” However, more than 75 years later, today’s UN faces criticism and calls for reform. In addition to programs that provide young people an opportunity to shape the UN’s future, CGS engages its members through various efforts to democratize the UN system through advocacy initiatives that include:
1 for 7 Billion Campaign
1 for 7 Billion was a global campaign supported by organizations and individuals from all corners of the globe, including CGS, committed to getting the best UN Secretary-General. Over 750 organizations signed up to the campaign with a combined reach of more than 170 million people worldwide that resulted in the appointment of a Secretary-General “following a much more open and transparent selection process that involves unprecedented open dialogues between all candidates and Member States in which civil society participated.” Learn more about assessment and next steps.
Coalition for the UN We Need
Coalition for the UN We Need: The Coalition for the UN We Need began as the UN2020 initiative, dedicated to using the 75th anniversary of the United Nations in 2020 as an opportunity to take stock and strengthen the UN system in partnership with civil society, governments, and the UN in support of a people-centered multilateralism. CGS participates actively in initiatives including the Global Future Forum and endorses the UN75 People’s Declaration and Plan for Global Action.
Our members and partners can endorse the UN75 People’s Declaration and Plan for Global Action.
United Nations Emergency Peace Service
A United Nations Emergency Peace Service (UNEPS) would effectively stand as a ‘UN 911’ first responder for complex emergencies, providing immediate availability of a legitimate service to prevent armed conflict and genocide, protect civilians at risk, ensure prompt start-up of demanding UN peace operations and address human needs. The Global Futures Forum of The Coalition for The UN We Need selected UNEPS out of 40 peace & security proposals) for further discussion with the UN and the Member States at the 2024 UN Summit of the Future. This project can be endorsed by sending a message to Dr. Peter Langille.
We the Peoples Campaign
The We the Peoples Campaign is a coalition of organizations calling for inclusive global governance through three specific institutional changes to strengthen the inclusive and democratic character of the UN: the creation of a World Citizens’ Initiative, UN Parliamentary Assembly (UNPA), and UN Civil Society Envoy. Individuals, organizations, and members of parliament can endorse the Call for Inclusive Global Governannce campaign.
