The United Nations Parliamentary Assembly

At the CGS 2021 Annual Conference, Andreas Bummel presented the case for establishing a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly (UNPA) as a foundational step toward democratic global governance. As Executive Director of Democracy Without Borders and coordinator of the international Campaign for a UNPA, Bummel brought decades of expertise on democratizing international institutions to this compelling session.

Bummel outlined the vision for a UNPA as a formally constituted body within the UN system, composed of parliamentarians who would represent the world’s citizens and exercise oversight functions. He explained how the assembly could begin modestly and evolve incrementally, eventually transitioning into a directly elected world parliament connected to a broader overhaul of the UN and related institutions.
