A Closer Look at the Role and Impact of International Courts and Tribunals (Session 1)

July 18, 2024 @ 1:00 am - 2:30 am EDT

In recognition of International Justice Day on July 17—commemorating the 1998 adoption of the Rome Statute that established the International Criminal Court—Citizens for Global Solutions hosted this inaugural webinar examining the role and impact of international courts and tribunals. Session 1 focused on nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament, with a particular emphasis on lessons from the Asia-Pacific region.

Event Description

This session was the first in a series intended to take a closer look at international judicial institutions and how they can effectively complement one another and domestic judicial systems. Today, the ICC forms an integral piece of a complex and complementary global judicial architecture, joining treaty-based tribunals, regional institutions, and alternative methods of dispute resolution. At the heart of this framework is the International Court of Justice (ICJ), established in 1945 as one of the principal organs of the United Nations and the primary means for the pacific resolution of disputes between states.

Speakers

  • Legal experts and practitioners from the Asia-Pacific region specializing in nuclear nonproliferation and international law

Policy Focus

  • The important role of the ICJ and its surprisingly high success rate in adjudicated disputes
  • Success stories from the Court’s history in the Asia-Pacific context
  • The case for all countries to accept the ICJ’s compulsory jurisdiction
  • How international courts and tribunals can complement domestic judicial systems on nonproliferation and disarmament
