About the United Nations Regular Budget
|
The work of the UN reaches every corner of the globe. The UN’s regular budget covers a variety of issues, ranging from sustainable development, environmental and refugee protection, disaster relief, counterterrorism, disarmament, and nuclear proliferation. Our contributions produce real results: the near-complete eradication of polio around the world, the decrease in childhood deaths from measles by nearly half, and the toughest-ever sanctions against Iran on their nuclear program. How the UN Budget is DeterminedThe UN General Assembly (composed of all UN member states) approves a two-year budget and determines how much each member should pay. This is broadly based on the capacity of each country to pay, as measured by their Gross National Income (GNI), with adjustments for external debt and poverty levels (low per capita income). |

About the United Nations Peacekeeping Budget
From the President's Cabinet

"In the past, our failure to pay all of our dues and to pay them on a timely basis has constrained the UN’s performance and deprived us of the ability to use our influence most effectively to promote reform. [President] Obama believes the U.S. should pay our dues to the UN in full and on time."
~ Dr. Susan Rice, Ambassador to the United Nations
