Announcing the Citizens for Global Solutions Online Book Club. Want to read books and discuss them with other like-minded individuals? Find out how!
Since the end of the Cold War, the United States has made great strides is securing nuclear material across the US and around the world. But as with any effort, either at home or abroad, it is the responsibility of the American people to ask, "Are we doing everything we can?" Although initiatives like the Nunn-Lugar Program—which allows the U.S. to work with Russia to secure Soviet nuclear material—have been in existence for over a decade, their success and continuation depend on the support of engaged Americans and funding from Congress. Get the whole story on nuclear proliferation.
Here at home, nuclear material is a part of our everyday lives. Nuclear waste is transported on our highways and nuclear power plants are in our backyards. It is essential, then, that as engaged citizens we recognize the risks of this reality and do everything we can to eliminate them. We can make a difference. We can advocate safety and security at home and abroad.
In many cases, this advocacy includes talking to others in our community who are interested in the issue and talking to local, state, and national representatives. Local and state representatives make decisions about investments and energy policy. And the U.S. Congress funds all of the programs that keep us as a nation safer. Does your Senator or Congressman sit on a committee that funds important safety and security initiatives? Find out, and begin a conversation about change and support in your community.
Securing nuclear material is happening right now. Read just a few success stories.
