The Connecting Global to Local Book Club

Read books, discuss ideas, be engaged

The Book Club is now open for discussion!

Visit it now and become part of the discussion.

The Citizens for Global Solutions Book Club provides you with a forum to read and discuss books with other thoughtful global citizens—or even ask the author a question. However, this is not Oprah's online book club. It's a forum for public reflection, open debate and lively discussion.

Our Club aims to keep you engaged with other people in your community, across the United States, and around the world. The best part is that the discussion takes place virtually, over a span of several weeks. You don't have to worry about being at a certain place, on a certain date, at a certain time. You can participate from the comfort of your home or office when you have the time and inclination.

Why are we doing this?

Have you ever read a book and wished you could discuss it with other like-minded individuals? CG2L wants you to have the chance to discuss books with a wider community and to ask the authors, as well as other experts in the field, questions. You'll probably learn just as much from the discussion as you do from the book.

So how does the book club work?

  1. Register Sign up on the Connecting the Global to Local Web site. As a site member, you automatically have the opportunity to participate in the book club.
  2. Learn You'll receive an Email announcing the next book to read and when the discussion starts. We'll also post an announcement on the CG2L Web site.
  3. Read You'll have 5-6 weeks to obtain the book, read it, and ponder.
  4. Discuss Using our on-line forum, you'll be able to discuss the book's themes, ask questions of the author, and even rate the work. The discussion will be announced through e-mail and on our site.

Our First Book

American Torture: From the Cold War to Abu Ghraib and Beyond by Michael Otterman, an award-winning freelance journalist and documentary filmmaker.

Order from Amazon.com or visit your local book store or library.

From the American Torture Website:
George W. Bush calls them an "alternative set of procedures"—forced standing for up to forty hours, sleep deprivation for weeks on end, dousing naked prisoners with ice water in rooms chilled to fifty degrees Fahrenheit, and strapping prisoners to inclined boards then flooding their mouths with water. American Torture examines the origins of this interrogation regime and traces how it was refined, spread, and kept legal. Along the way, American Torture uncovers the effects of state-sponsored torture and deconstructs the myths espoused by its proponents.
