The Global Citizen: U.N. Funding
Citizens for Global Solutions Field Organizer in Indiana, Mike Oles, just had a letter to the editor published in the Indianapolis Star! It's a great piece that points out that Haiti's Cholera outbreak is not a reason to defund the U.N., but rather why U.N. Peacekeepers need to be better equipped.
Mike writes, "If there is a lesson to be learned from this avoidable disaster, it is the need for well-trained and well-funded U.N. peacekeepers." Well said Mike. U.N. Peacekeepers are vital to many countries around the world, and they can't do their job if they aren't supported by wealthy nations like the U.S.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) released a report on Tuesday that presented substantial evidence that Iran has an active secret program to become a nuclear power. The report established that Iran has taken many steps towards developing a nuclear weapon, including engaging in efforts to obtain a secure source of uranium, creating computer models of nuclear explosions, and researching nuclear triggers. Additionally, it has experimented with conventional explosives to compress metal into a dense mass able to start a chain reaction and has built a large containment vessel intended for testing the feasibility of such explosive compression.
Here's a few excerpts from my latest blog at Care 2 entitled, "United States' UN-Wise UNESCO Policy," which discusses two U.S. laws that halt contributions to U.N. agencies that accept Palestinian membership. These laws forced the United States to stop funding the United Nations Education, Science, and Cultural Organization last week when the organization's members voted to accept Palestinian membership.
"The big question to answer is who benefits and loses from maintaining this policy. The biggest winners are people who use the Middle East conflict as a platform to spew anti-U.N. views and promote an isolationist agenda for the United States. The biggest loser isn't the Palestinians or Israelis, or even the U.N. It's the United States."
Republican presidential candidates proved once again Tuesday night in Las Vegas that they are vastly unqualified to direct our country's foreign policy. Ron Paul advocated returning to a more isolationist stance during a discussion on defense cuts. Michele Bachmann suggested retaliation against Iran after the discovery of the recent attempt to attack a Saudi diplomat living in the U.S. But at no point of the debate was the lack of foreign policy experience clearer than when the candidates discussed cutting foreign aid.
Last Friday, Citizens for Global Solutions CEO Don Kraus was quoted in an article by Jim Lobe from Inter Press Service on Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen's extreme anti-U.N. legislation that was introduced in late August.
When asked about why organizations like Citizens for Global Solutions are fighting so hard against a bill that will not become law, Kraus said,
"It sets the agenda not only for House Republicans, but potentially many of the Republican presidential candidates and Congress in 2013. As extreme and misguided as this proposal is, worse ideas have taken a life of their own when not addressed immediately and seriously at their inception."

Recently The 2009 Supplemental Appropriations Bill was passed by both chambers of Congress. This bill will repay the U.S.'s debt to the United Nations which has accumulated since 1999 and appropriates $906 million for peacekeeping operations. This bill is an important demonstration of President Obama's commitment to showing U.S. leadership through diplomacy as well as his commitment to engaging effectively with the United Nations.
The Foreign Relations Authorization Act for FY2010 was voted on yesterday (June 10) in the House of Representatives. The Bill passed successfully by a vote of 235 to 187. Through a mass "vote alert" to foreign policy staffers on the Hill, Citizens for Global Solutions helped to successfully defeat an amendment aimed at limiting United States funding for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
I attended the House Foreign Affairs Committee Mark-Up Hearing for the Foreign Relations Authorization Bill today, and I was pleased to see that the Bill will be accepted with limited amendments. The amendments that have been added only seek to expand and suggest areas that the State Department should use its funds, not to inhibit the progress of or cut back on the amount of funding for State Department actions.
