The Global Citizen: Mugabe
Following the negotiations that took place the week of September 8, 2008, the political leaders in Zimbabwe have finally reached a deal to share power. Coming out of negotiations Friday, September 12, Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai were smiling as they told reporters of the deal that had been brokered. Although details were only released the following Monday, both leaders expressed their satisfaction with the talks.
Monday, September 8 2008, saw the resumption of power sharing talks between political rivals Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai in Zimbabwe. Following the failure of a clear victory for either candidate in the March 2008 elections, talks have since been launched in the capital to reach a negotiated settlement over power distribution.
Much has been made in the past week of the ongoing talks in South Africa by delegates of Zimbabwe's feuding parties, Zanu-PF and MDC, to negotiate an end to the country's current political crisis. Talks are coming on the heels of what has been a turbulent three months following the controversial March 29th general elections.
So far, the elections (or lack there of) in Zimbabwe have stirred up major international attention. Morgan Tsvangirai defeated Robert Mugabe (the incumbent president), in March 2008, which provided hope to Zimbabweans that a new leader would take office and an increase in human rights and progress would be restored. However, since Tsvangirai did not officially attain the majority, a runoff election was scheduled for this Friday, June 27, 2008.
