The Global Citizen: General
On Wednesday, August 26, 2009, the United States Senate lost its third longest serving member, Senator Edward Kennedy. President Barack Obama issued this statement in response to Kennedy's passing, "An important chapter in our history has come to an end," the statement said. "Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States senator of our time."
The name of our organization, "Citizens for Global Solutions" has two concepts built into it: "Citizens" and "Global Solutions." We put a lot of energy into thinking about global solutions. But today I want you to spend some time thinking about the first term, 'Citizens'. We are gathered here today as citizens of states from across the nation: from California to Maine. And we are here as proud citizens of the United States of America.
Senate passage of the Omnibus appropriations bill quietly marked the end of Congressional sanctions on nations that have ratified the International Criminal Court. It also officially ends the Bush administration's Bilateral Immunity Agreement (or Article 98) campaign, clearing the way for greater U.S. cooperation with the Court.
Thank you Representative Lowey, Senator Leahy and your staffs!
I just participated in 2 back-to-back Obama transition team meetings with Eric Schwartz. Eric is in charge of the US/UN transition team and also handles multilateral issues for the National Security Policy team, which is why the transition asked him to meet with us.
"A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical elusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."
Correct me, please, if I'm wrong, but given the state of global disruption, shouldn't the American people, especially the presidential candidates, do everything they can to promote a sustainable environment? The Democratic National Convention Host Committee has done just that - they have proposed guidelines to encourage organic food and products to be distributed at the Convention in August 2008. Apparently, these conditions do not appeal to Washington Post contributor, David Montgomery.
Errol Morris, the talented documentary filmmaker best known for his film Fog of War, has a provocative essay ("The Most Curious Thing") in yesterday's New York Times about the Abu Ghraib torture scandal.

Tip o' the hat to Lisa!
Last night, on the way home from dinner with friends, I bumped into another friend and colleague I had not seen in some time. This individual, who first came to the U.S. as a political refugee from Kenya, began to tell me about the violence in his homeland and the risks to peace. On an individual note he let me know that his brother in law had been killed in the violence and that his parent's farm was burnt by a mob. On a big picture level he stated real concern about the push by Kenya PM Mr. Odinga to secure amnesty for his supporters.
Many of you have probably followed the debate at the University of Berkeley re: the position of Professor John Yoo. Briefly, Yoo is deemed to be one of the chief enablers of the U.S. torture program and the author of key memos in this area. The New York Times, in an editorial, describes the memos (in part) as follows:
