The Global Citizen: CGS Political Action Committee (PAC)
After a photo-finish to the Washington State Senate race, CGS-endorsed Senator Patty Murray has been declared the winner of the contest today, defeating Republican opponent Dino Rossi.
CGS endorsed Senator Murray due to her strong support for international engagement. She is a proponent of increased foreign aid from the U.S. and supports cooperation with international institutions. We congratulate Senator Murray on her victory and look forward to continuing to work with her on global issues in the 112th Congress next year.
Citizens for Global Solutions is deeply saddened by the defeat of Senator Russ Feingold of Wisconsin. Senator Feingold, a longtime friend and ally of CGS, lost his bid for re-election to Republican challenger Ron Johnson.
Senator Feingold has been one of the staunchest champions of global issues on Capitol Hill throughout his time in office. He has always been a member of Congress that CGS could count on, whether to introduce legislation or to vote in support of our priorities in the Senate. This year, Senator Feingold took the lead in creating effective U.S. policy on genocide prevention by sponsoring new legislation. We appreciated the opportunity to work with him and his staff on this critically important issue.
Following a very close race in Virginia's 11th district, CGS- endorsed Gerry Connolly has a lead of more than 900 votes over Republican challenger Keith Fimian. The vote will be officially certified on November 22; Fimian can request a recount if the vote margin remains less than half a percentage point, but it would not be automatic.
Rep. Connolly has developed a strong record on CGS issues including support for the United Nations during his time in office. He has been a strong champion of increased cooperation with international organizations, which earned him an A in CGS's 2010 Congressional Report Card. Read more about Rep. Connolly's voting record.
We look forward to the opportunity to continue working with Rep. Connolly on important foreign policy issues. Congratulations!
In Washington State, the senate race continues as we wait for full reporting of the votes. As of Wednesday afternoon, at 62 % reporting, Patty Murray (D-WA), the incumbent senator, leads her challenger Dino Rossi by 14,005 votes. Votes remain to be tallied, but it looks as if Murray will most likely keep her seat in the Senate.
We endorsed Senator Murray due to her support for international cooperation by the U.S. She is a proponent of increased foreign aid from the U.S. as well as supportive of cooperation with international institutions. We are happy to see the race leaning in her direction, and look forward to continuing our work with her if she indeed emerges as the successful candidate. We will continue to update you on the Washington Senate race as more news becomes available.
Rep. Joseph Cao (R-LA 02), was defeated in his race to keep his seat in the House of Representatives by Cedric Richmond (D-LA 02). We endorsed Rep. Cao in his campaign and we are sorry to see him lose his seat.
Rep. Cao has been a great champion of global issues, including involvement in the UN, support for U.S. cooperation with the ICC and international cooperation. He worked to promote bipartisan activity in international issues and publicly espoused his advocacy for global interdependence. In 2009 he helped launched the American Engagement Caucus, a bipartisan congressional caucus dedicated to greater international engagement. His influence and passion for global issues will be missed in Congress.
As he was an enthusiastic supporter of our issues and a genuine global citizen, we are unhappy to see Cao defeated. However, we look forward to forging a relationship with Rep.-Elect Richmond and to working with him in the future.
In a very close contest, CGS-endorsed Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias (D), conceded the Illinois Senate race to former Congressman Mark Kirk. President Obama's former seat will now change hands to the Republican Party.
We are saddened by the missed opportunity to work with Alexi Giannoulias, who responded very favorably in support of global issues in our Candidate Questionnaire. Giannoulias voiced his support for the International Criminal Court, and the importance of the Control Test Ban Treaty, not just for US foreign policy, but for a greater global good.
We are, however, excited to work with Senator-elect Mark Kirk in advancing our issues. This endorsement choice was a difficult decision for CGS. Although Kirk did not return our Candidate Questionnaire, he has made a name for himself as a moderate and a member of Congress who is willing to work across the aisle and seek bipartisan solutions for the many issues confronting our nation.
Citizens for Global Solutions is pleased to announce that a majority of our endorsed candidates were elected to Congress on Tuesday, with 74% of the House and Senate candidates endorsed winning in both chambers. While there are still a total of 14 races undecided, it appears that next Congress we will have 144 House Members and 10 Senators that we have built relationships with through our Global Solutions PAC. While 61% of the approximately $23,000 contributed to House races went to winners, only 29% of $22,500 contributed to Senate campaigns went to winners.
Of course there were some stunning defeats. The loss of Sen. Feingold will be felt far and wide, and the defeat of Rep. Sestak is particularly hard.
But Tuesday's election by and large proved that Americans continue to reject platforms that are out of the mainstream. Politics appears, for the time being, to have been stopped at the water's edge.
MO-3
Last night in the House race for Missouri's 3rd District, Representative Russ Carnahan (D) defeated his opponent Ed Martin and won a fourth term in office. We are very excited about this win at Citizens for Global Solutions. Representative Carnahan is a co-founder and chair of the American Engagement Caucus and scored an A+ on our recent congressional report card. Rep. Carnahan finished the election with 48.9% of the vote. He and Martin were neck and neck in the rural areas of the district, but Carnahan beat Martin 2 to 1 in the city of St. Louis. We are very happy to see Representative Carnahan return to D.C. and we look forward to working with him and the American Engagement Caucus in the future.
We are sad to report that House Incumbent Tom Perriello from Virginia's 5th district lost his bid for re-election to Republican challenger Robert Hurt. Perriello was endorsed by Citizens for Global Solutions because of his passion for global issues and commitment to making the world a safer place for future generations. His support of the United Nations as a means to help resolve international conflict as well as his commitment on various global issues such as peacekeeping earned him an A on CGS'S 2010 Congressional Report Card.
